Fosetil Aluminum User Guide

One of the best known fungicides for fighting different types of molds and neck and root fungi such as Phytophthora it is Fosetil Aluminum, or also called Fosetil-Al.

Although there are quite a few formulations on the market based on this active ingredient (alone or combined with other fungicides to amplify the mechanism of action), the most common concentration is Fosetil-Al 80%, in powder wettable.

In this article we tell you the main fundamentals of this systemic fungicide currently (we do not know until when) for a wide variety of crops, being an effective tool in the fight against diseases that are difficult to cure.

What is Fosetyl Aluminum?

Fosetil Aluminum (Fosetil Al) is a fungicide characterized by a complete system (bottom-up and top-down). This comprehensive system allows it to reach areas in crops where other fungicides can’t reach, so it’s a very effective tool in the fight against complicated fungi.

The fact that the fungicide has the ability to move both up and down in the plant means that Fosetil Aluminum can be applied by by foliar application or in fertigation.

The active substance, ethylphosphonate, acts by a dual pathway of action against fungi, with preventive and curative activity.

  • Direct action: reduces the ability of some fungi to sporulate.
  • Indirect action: It acts as an elicitor and activates the plant’s natural defenses to defend against fungal attack.

Main fungi that prevent and control

The active ingredient Fosetil Al is designed to combat internal fungi that sporulate inside the epidermis and have the ability to move through the cambium (meristematic plant tissue) of the plant.

It is successfully used against: bacteriosis, Phytophthora, Pythium and different groups of molds (peronospora, Pseudoperonosporaetc)

Fosetyl aluminum incompatibilities

  • Fosetil Aluminum is incompatible with copper-based products.
  • It is incompatible with foliar fertilizers containing mineral nitrogen, and it is advisable to apply them before or after treatment with this fungicide.
  • It is incompatible with oils, and it is advisable to apply this product at least 1 week later.

Additional Recommendations

In foliar applications and fertigation, Fosetil Aluminum has a pH range in which the product does not lose its properties. When mixed with other fungicides, insecticides or nutritional products, it is recommended that the resulting pH does not fall below 4.0.

If this is the case, it is recommended to increase the pH of the mixture (before incorporating the Fosetil Al) with potash or calcium hydroxide.

Fosetil Al is more easily absorbed and its mobility within the plant is greatest when the crop is in a period of active growth.

Recommended products

In gardening, Fosetil Al is widely used to control conifer browning, a very common disease in cypress and other related species, especially in conditions of high substrate humidity.

It is combated using this active ingredient in foliar applications and fertigation.
