The artichoke plant can reproduce in several ways, but mainly in two. One would be for seedlings and later transplanting into the garden, and another more common is for suckers, although for this we first need to have plants.

The artichoke is a perennial crop. This means that it will be with us for a long time, so it is ideal that we choose a fixed place for planting the artichoke in the garden, which must be in full sun and protected from strong winds.
In excessively hot climates, we can put them in partial shade.
What is good about this culture is that the good thing about artichokes is that they do not require much care and are very hardy, and although they have needs periods of cold for a good development, it is necessary to pay attention to the continuous frosts.
The ideal temperature for growing artichokes is between 7 and 29º and a humid climate is preferable to an excessively hot and dry climate.

When to plant artichokes?
Artichokes are planted in early spring, when we leave the risk of frost behind us. For example, here in Asturias, where La Huertina is located, in April, that is, in spring. In the case of suckers, planting is done in early summer.

We can add fertilizers such as well-matured manure, compost or earthworm humus. It is important for this crop to avoid fertilizers that are too rich in nitrogen.
Soil preparation for cultivation is very important for almost all plants, but especially for artichokes because they have a very strong and deep root system.
Before, almost all artichokes were planted by suckers, but for some time it has been possible that artichokes grown from seeds produce earlier, with which we will have the first harvests in the same year.
the type of soil
It is necessary to leave a well-worked and loose soil. The artichoke is a plant that adapts better to deep soils, with good drainage, so it is better to avoid very clayey, compacted and excessively humid soils.
The pH is slightly alkaline although it adapts very well to many soils. I explained it recently in a video and in a post how to measure soil pH.
Once we have prepared the ground, we can make a hole to plant our artichoke. Ideally, this should be about twice the size of the seedbed. We can add a few handfuls of homemade worm humus.
Remove the artichoke from the seedbed or pot and cover loosely.
Planting distance in artichoke cultivation
If we want to plant more than one artichoke plant, as is my case, we will leave a planting frame or a separation of the plants from each other of 80 cm.
If we want to plant more than one furrow or row, we must leave a separation between the rows of at least 1 meter. And as always after planting or sowing something we will apply very good irrigation.
Irrigation
As already mentioned, this culture does not like dry environments. It must then be taken into account that the artichoke requires regular watering, especially in the growth phase and later in the formation of the flower. Otherwise it loses quality.
In the formation of the flower we can apply irrigation with liquid fertilizers rich in potassium such as comfrey porridge. The Russian comfrey It is a very interesting plant. Artichokes are not really a very productive crop, but really the taste of some homemade artichokes is amazing and they will hardly give us work.
