The cultivation of kale or kale, or simply kale, is increasingly present in gardens because it is a very nutritious, versatile vegetable with many culinary possibilities.
Kale belongs to the same family as cabbage and cabbage, including cabbage, red cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and other collard greens. Therefore, they are similar both in appearance and in processes, care, needs and the like.

When to Plant Kale or Kale in the Garden
Most of these crops (cabbage, cabbage, etc.) grow in autumn. These are plants that prefer temperate climates, as high temperatures could cause them to grow prematurely.
Cabbage Kale Nero di Toscana
- Plant that reaches between 50 and 60 cm in height
- With characteristic very curly green leaves
- Great nutritional contribution
We have two different seasons in which we can plant kale. In any case, in my opinion, the ideal time would be mid-summer. It is sown in the nursery to put it in the orchard at the beginning of autumn.
Although in the case of kale it is possible to sow directly, being a time when we have the garden in full production, it is preferable to make a seedbed.
The other time to plant kale is spring, or late winter at the earliest in regions or areas with a milder climate. It can even be planted in semi-shaded areas to avoid high temperatures.
Although in truth I prefer to reserve summer for spring-summer crops and crops like this leave it for fall, which is a time when we have less growing options.
Preparing the Seedbed for Kale
Seedbed preparation for kale is not much of a mystery. Those who follow this blog or the YouTube channel have already seen many times how I prepare it. We can use the purchased plants or reuse them. I have also repeatedly explained how to do home sowing.
Ideally, they should be at least 10cm deep. We will fill them with substrate for seedlingsWhat can you make or buy? As always I fill the seedbed leaving a finger in front of the unsoiled edge. I recommend burying no more than two or three times its size, so this centimeter will be enough to later water the substrate to finish covering the seed.
If the seed is too buried, it will have more problems to germinate and grow, and what we are looking for is to help the plant in this process, so that everything is as smooth and efficient as possible.
Kale needs soil rich in nitrogen and organic matter, so a good growing medium will also be good for the seed, so we’re starting this crop off right.
In the nursery, in each cell, we will put two to three seeds in case of failure and we will give birth to another plant, always in case. It is important, as in all crops, to sow a few extra seeds, in case of mishaps. If all the plants grow, we can always give them to neighbors or friends.
Irrigation of kale
Irrigation in this type of crop, as is the case for plant cabbage and other similar factories, is a priority. It likes rather moist soils. It is necessary to check that it does not become waterlogged, even if it is just as important to avoid dry soils and very spaced irrigations.
Therefore, to prevent the high temperatures from evaporating the water and drying out the substrate, it is an ideal crop for autumn.
Ideal place
Although in the beginning when we prepare the seedbed with the kale it is not necessary to put it in a protected place, it is important that as they start to germinate we put in full sun.
get seeds
As we progress in growing kale, we’ll see how to get the kale seeds, like we did in the post on how to extract the seeds. cabbage seeds. In fact, we can see that the seeds of the two cabbages can be confused with each other perfectly.
For now, we leave the post here. Watch the video and stay tuned for the next steps in the process.
