Broccoli is a crop that requires a large amount of nitrogen and calcium, so this must be taken into account before planting or after. A good, eco-friendly method is to provide well-chopped eggshells, but this is a slow-release method. The broccoli pellet, which is what we eat, is harvested 60 to 90 days after transplanting the plants, taking this into account, we will see which crops we can combine.

Once cooler weather begins to arrive, it’s a good idea to replant lettuce. Remember that with the heat, they go to seed faster and you cannot enjoy them because the flavor of the leaves is acidified. In addition, the lettuce will be ready to harvest in a month or you can pick its leaves as you want.

Spinach

Spinach also bolts if it is too hot, but in autumn it can be planted between the broccoli at a distance of 15 to 20 cm as a planting frame. This plant can also take the larger leaves to use when needed.

chard

Swiss chard is an ideal plant to combine with broccoli, as it provides shade on the hottest days and also prevents the emergence of many weeds as its large leaves shade the ground.

Celery

Did you know that certain plants can alter the taste of their companions? Well, celery is one of them, giving broccoli a slight sweet flavor. When the celery grows, it will also shade the broccoli. If you know where the crop will get the most sun, you can plant the celery there to serve as an umbrella.

beets

Beet is a crop that does not consume calcium from the soil, so it is ideal to plant next to broccoli, and they do not compete for space.

radishes

It is a quick harvest, in less than a month you can already harvest them. They also do not consume calcium as in the previous case. They also thrive in places where shade predominates.

Rhubarb

This curious plant with edible leaves is ideal to associate with broccoli but not next to it because it competes with nutrients. They can be planted about 40 cm apart and the advantage of rhubarb is that it attracts whiteflies, a plague that generally damages cabbages a lot. It should also be planted near other cabbage crops such as kale, collard greens, colino, kale, Brussels sprouts, rapini…

Onions

Some of the components present in onions are repellent to most pests, so they will not be attracted to the crop if we combine it with onions. It is not necessary to intercrop the onions, we can put them around the bed or intercrop rows with broccoli or other crops. Other plants of the same onion family, such as spring onions or shallots, are also useful.

Potatoes

Potato tubers break up the soil and increase the flow of nutrients to the broccoli plants. In fact, it’s the only plant in the nightshade family that can be associated with this crop because it doesn’t compete for the nutrients that broccoli needs. Tomato, pepper and eggplant need many nutrients to grow their fruit.

Dill

Dill is a crop that performs a triple function with broccoli, being one of the best plants to associate with this crop. It has the ability to improve the flavor of broccoli, stimulates growth and if the plant flowers, it will attract predators that eat broccoli pests such as aphid or caterpillar parasitic wasps, hoverflies, excellent pollinators including larvae eat aphids and ladybugs.

Basil

It is a plant that can be grown with broccoli or plant broccoli on a terrace where there is already basil planted in the spring. Its flowers attract predatory wasps of certain pests that can attack broccoli.

mint

Mint is a plant that benefits a lot because it repels pests such as whiteflies, cabbage moths, fleas and aphids, common pests in broccoli cultivation. But it is also true that it is very invasive, if it is planted in the ground there will be no way to eradicate it. If you have pots with mints, you can place them near the broccoli when planting them for at least the first month, which is when the plants are most helpless. You have to be careful with mints because they produce elongated branches that are able to root easily, even if you put them in a pot they can stick to the ground.

Rosemary

Another pest control plant is rosemary, it can be planted on the farm as a hedge or combined with other plants such as basil. Depending on where you live, it may or may not survive the winter.

Thyme

It is a plant that is good to have at this time of year when colds and flus are more frequent. Its infusion helps us with its multiple medicinal properties. Thyme also repels insect pests, and its flowers attract pollinators and predators like wasps and leatherback beetles.

Chamomile

If you sow it before the first rains, it’s better, I don’t know if that happens to you, but the seeds only come out with the rainwater. Chamomile is another excellent herbal medicine that is useful as an infusion for stomach ailments and to attract predatory insects to the garden with its rich smell.
