Making lemon tree cuttings is one of the ways we have to propagate this tree and have lemons at home or in the garden. We are going to see two methods to effectively reproduce our tree and you can try both or only one.

When to take lemon tree cuttings?
This is an important question. We will do this in the spring, as this is the perfect time to start this process in the first and second method.
Reproduce the lemon tree by cuttings, first method
We are going to see a first method to make a lemon tree cutting. It involves taking a soft, flexible stem, a young, non-woody branch from a lemon tree, a first or second year branch, and growing it into a new plant.

GRÜNTEK Specht Secateurs Blade 215mm/50mm. Scissors…
- Anvil pruner with Bypass cutting system for powerful and precise cutting.
- Sharp and long 55 mm upper blade made of SK5 steel
- Ergonomic PVC coated aluminum handles.
- Practical secateurs to work even for a long time.
- Recommended cuts: up to 20 mm, length 215 mm, weight 226 gr.
It is important to check that they have at least four nodes, where new shoots or roots will come from. About 3 or 4 centimeters from the last knot, we will make a diagonal cut, at 45 degrees, with a well-sharpened and sanitized pruner.

We will take several cuttings to try, in case we want more than one plant or if we don’t just take one cutting, have more. We cut all the leaves of each of them except the two upper ones, and we cut half of these two.
root
Once our lemon tree cuttings are ready, we will use a house rooting. For this occasion, we have chosen the aloe vera rooting agentthat we have already seen on other occasions on the blog.

Cut some pieces of aloe and there we introduce the lower part which is the cutting of the lemon tree cutting. Aloe vera, in addition to being used for rooting, is healing, which will help keep the new plant healthy.
containers
Once we have made the cuttings of lemon trees, we will prepare a container to place them. In our case, and what you can do, is to recycle a bottle of 1 L or 1 ½ L. We cut the upper part and we make a few holes in the base so that it flows.
Inside the container we add a mixture of peat with river sand Once this mixture is in place, we make 3 deep holes with a stick, this is where we will place our cuttings.
There we place each, dropping all the aloe gel into each hole, to reap the benefits of this rooting agent. We place a good part of the stem, leaving only a node and the two cut leaves outside the hole.

Irrigation
As you already know, when we do a transplant or something similar like this type of cuttings, we always do a good watering. The following will also be generous, given that the substrate is moist, although not flooded.
take care of the cuttings
With the upper part of the bottle we will make a sort of greenhouse so that the lemon tree cuttings are protected. What we do is place this part and stick it with transparent tape, and leave our cuttings in a sheltered place, without direct sunlight. We will avoid areas with very high or very low temperatures.
Reproduce the lemon tree by cuttings, second method
For this second method, we will use semi-woody branches, two to three years old. The difference can be seen in both thickness and color, as can be seen in the video.
We also make a diagonal cut and remove all the leaves, also cutting where they branch. In this case we will not leave any leaves.
In the lower part of our cut, about 3 or 4 centimeters from the diagonal cut, with a cutter or a knife we remove the bark. But only from this part.
root
We are going to introduce this part in which we have peeled the bark into an aloe vera leaf, to help root and heal the cut.
Container, watering and maintenance
We’ll do the same process for the bottle, although in this case we’ll make the hole deep in the center, since it’s a single cut. The same with watering, the same as in the first method.
Also in this case we will use the remaining part of the bottle to create our mini greenhouse and thus protect, in an area without extreme temperatures or direct sun, but light, our cutting.
Every two or three days, we water through the upper part of the bottle, opening the lid of it. With this technique, a healthy new lemon tree can be obtained in a few months.
transplant lemon trees
After a few weeks, the cutting will start producing new leaves and roots. Once the tree has grown enough, after about 3 months or so, it should be ready to transplant into a larger pot to give it room to root and grow.
Attention to consider
Once our lemon tree cuttings are worked and our tree is large enough, there are certain cares for this plant that need to be considered. One of the most common, and which we have already talked about on the blog, is when yellow leaves on lemon tree. There can be different reasons, but mainly it is a lack of nutrients. For this, I advise to pay with earthworm humus, manure, compost tea or any other type of subscription that we have within our reach.
If what you want is to increase the production of lemons, I advise you stimulate the lemon tree to bear fruit. One way is to protect it from the winds. Another is spring fertilization with potato water for plants, rich in potassium. A very effective way to provide this nutrient, and very accessible.
In addition to the wind, it is necessary to know the lemon tree what minimum temperature supports, as well as what maximum temperature. And based on this, protect it if necessary, especially in the coldest periods, as we saw in the post on how to care for a lemon tree in winter.
that we were going to plant a lemon tree or reproduce it by cuttings, all of this is very important. The same thing happens when prune a lemon tree to get a healthier tree with better results.
