How to sow beets. Everything you need to know to grow the plant

How to plant beets is a challenge for any beginning gardener. It is not a difficult culture, but it requires, like any culture, some knowledge and elements to take into account. The beet plant is Vulgar Beta, also called betarraga or betabel, a crop that can be planted almost all year round in addition to being a crop with little care. It’s usually pretty easy for those new to growing their own vegetables, and the harvest and taste make all the difference compared to store-bought beets. In about three months, we will be able to harvest ours.

How beets are planted

Beet is a crop that can be grown almost all year round, avoiding the hottest summer months as much as possible, although it is an all-terrain vegetable, it tolerates heat very well and the cold. In my case, it’s a crop that I plant in late summer or fall, when I start pulling summer crops, because its preferred climate is temperate and humid. Before we start and sow the beets, we will soak the seeds while we prepare the soil to help us germinate much earlier.

TYPE OF SOIL FOR PLANTING BEET

The key to beet growing is the soil. We must prepare it very well, because it is a root crop, the soil must be very loose, so that the root grows well and does not become deformed. Clay soils are not suitable for it at all. It must also be a soil rich in nutrients, but without overdoing it, especially for potassium, you can add ash apart from the earthworm humus, which will be very practical for forming the root. Normally it is grown in full sun, but beet cultivation accepts partial shade, so if you have partial shade in the garden, you can take advantage of this vegetable.

BEET PLANTING DISTANCE

As it is better to sow the beets directly on the terrace or on the ground, we will not make a nursery. Direct seeding is much better. We will prepare the furrows for planting the beetroot, following a line 2 cm deep and the distance between the plants will be approximately 20cmwith a gap between lines of at least 30 to 40 cm between one and the other.

The seed which is actually the fruit of the beet called glomerulus It contains the seeds themselves, as is the case with Swiss chard. From each of these glomeruli will be born two to three plants, which will later have to be thinned out and leave only one.

CLIMATE FOR BEET GROWING

Beets are a crop that likes rather warm and humid temperatures. It is therefore an exceptional crop for autumn and spring, the ideal temperature for cultivation is between 10 and 24 although it tolerates heat well and even some frosts.

WATERING

For planting beets, moist soils are best, but prolonged flooding should be avoided as this can rot the root. Poor irrigation and very dry soils can cause beets to crack. Frequent and abundant watering is ideal, obviously depending on the time of year, taking care above all that the soil does not dry out and keeping this humidity as constant as possible. As planting beets has these complex characteristics, periods like autumn and spring are ideal for its cultivation.

In more or less 10 or 15 days, our beets will germinate and then we will have to thin out those that are very close to each other, respecting the planting framework I mentioned above. Do not suffer to make this thinning, it is necessary and essential that they develop.

Regarding the association of crops, it can be associated perfectly with lettuce, onions, cabbage, peas, cucumbers, leeks, garlic and turnips and it is necessary avoid planting it associated with crops of the same family such as spinach and chard.
