Plant onions. How and when to plant onions in the garden

Planting onions is a very simple, root crop which, although a bit slow, can start growing in late winter. The truth is that it hardly needs care and this plant helps us to grow it together with many others so as to take advantage of the space and, in doing so, protect the crops.

I have been planting them for many years on the edges of the terraces without devoting one exclusively to them, as I showed you in the salad terrace where on the same terrace we used to plant onions, plant tomatoes, plant lettuces and plant basil!

We can choose two options for planting the onion. The most common and easiest is to buy the seedling already in the nursery, normally a hundred are sold and it is very comfortable or we also have the option of making a “seedling” and planting our onions. The truth is that the onion is one of the few root crops that does well in transplantingroot crops should normally be planted in their final location and they do not tolerate transplants well.

WHEN TO PLANT ONION AND IN WHAT MONTH IS IT SOWN

An important fact is the time of planting the onion, we can do it at two different times depending on the onion. We have the winter onion that we sow at the end of summer, that we can plant in September, and the onion that we will harvest in summer, that we plant at the end of winter or at the beginning of spring, that is say an onion that is sown in March or early April.

WHERE TO PLANT ONION

plant onions

Undoubtedly, an important thing is where to plant onions. We must find a place where it receives good exposure to the sun, since the onion is a crop that likes good temperatures and full sun. At the start of cultivation it tolerates low temperatures well but as it develops the bulb needs good temperatures, the ideal being from 15º. The onion is a very versatile crop and we are going to be able to grow it combining it with many crops, in fact it is ideal for it because it does not grow much and in about four months we will have it ready.

SUITABLE SOIL FOR GROWING ONIONS

The soil for planting onions, although it prefers loose soil with deep tillage and rich in organic matter, if it is clay soil, good crops usually come out. On the contrary, very poor and sandy soils form smaller bulbs, which do not develop well and have a much stronger flavor.

The onion is a somewhat rustic crop, therefore not very demanding in terms of soil, but it is important that if we are going to combine it with summer crops, we leave a well-prepared, loose and spongy soil. Even so, my experience is that in soils that are too loose, the onion forms less of a bulb, even in excessively nitrogenous soils.

HOW TO PLANT ONIONS

To plant onions what I do is cut the stem more or less at 1/3 of the plant, with this we will make the new shoots come out with more strength and vitality, although it is not strictly necessary, I checked that it is fine.

We will see two methods for planting onions in one case we will plant them in an entire terrace dedicated to them and another by associating it with crops.

HOW TO PLANT ONIONS IN A WALK

The first method would be to make a furrow across the width of the terrace once we have prepared the soil, not too deep, more or less about 5 or 7 cm, and place our onions consecutively, at a planting distance of about 20 cm. It would be really easy to calculate since if we imagined a formed onion we would see that it occupies more or less this diameter and this is the space that must be left for them to develop.

Once we have put the onions in the first furrow, we make another furrow about 20 cm from the first, so that with the soil that we obtain by making this furrow, we cover the first one, as you can see, and place the onions about 20 cm from the separation.

PLANTING ONIONS WITH A PLANTER BOX

The second system is to plant the onion with a planter. A fairly simple and quick method. I use this system for terraces where I will combine onions with other crops, in this way I place them at the edge of the terrace. After preparing the ground with a pointed stick or planter, we will make the holes where we will introduce the onions. The planting distance in this case also does not change, and we will separate them by 20 cm from each other. Then we put our onions and we cover the hole by pressing a little.

WHEN ONIONS ARE PICKED

The onion takes about 4 months to be ready to harvest. Although it also depends on when we harvest it, because we may want to harvest the spring onion, so the harvest time of the onion would be shorter and available in about 3 months.

ONION IRRIGATION

Watering should be moderate as it is very sensitive to excess humidity which can rot the bulbs and it is advisable to water as little as possible towards the end of the crop, as this promotes conservation. This is why a good planting time is now at the end of winter. In addition, the onion is a plant of temperate climates and, fortunately, in the first phase of cultivation it can withstand sub-zero temperatures well, but when it begins to develop and form the bulb, it prefers the higher temperatures and long days.

How much to water the onion, it is worth knowing that it is not demanding in terms of irrigation, and in fact they need little irrigation. Two stages of irrigation will be distinguished, one first stage in which the plant forms where the risks will be somewhat more next and a second phase where the bulb is already formed, where the risks will be further reduced.

And more or less 20 days before harvesting them, we will stop watering the onions, although we will see this in other videos on the channel about growing and harvesting onions.

WHAT CROPS CAN BE COLLECTED WITH ONION

The most interesting thing about the onion is its versatility to be a good companion for growing other vegetables. The intercropping not only helps us to save space in the garden, by putting more crops in the same space, but also by intercropping the onion, we can get rid of some pests of other crops, such as carrots. In addition, the onion enriches the soil thanks to the mycorrhizae of its roots. We can associate the onion with many cultures, among which, as I mentioned the carrot, the cucumber, the lettuce, the tomato That is Eggplant.

Under no circumstances will we associate it with crops such as peas, beans or potatoes.
