There are orchards in the world that do not have irrigation water because it is a desert area or there is no access to a nearby water intake. So how do you maintain a garden? Sometimes the desire to cultivate exceeds the complexity of irrigation. In today’s article we will learn about some methods for irrigating and maintaining moisture in the soil longer.

enjoy the rain
If it rains sporadically in your region or growing area, the ideal would be to set up a system to capture and store as much rainwater as possible to store it in barrels, jugs or cisterns. The method I used on my farm is similar to the pond method, where I put plates around it to catch more water. And every time it rains, I empty it so it’s ready for the next rain.
Padding is your ally
To keep the soil moist for as long as possible, it would be ideal to put some kind of mulch. In my garden I use straw, although it’s not the most suitable because the seeds can sprout, it’s the cheapest I can get and it does its job well.
Solar Irrigation
I use this method for trees but it can be implemented in any culture. It consists of using small PET or 1.5 liter bottles, the top of which will be cut off, buried in the ground and filled with water. On top we will place a 5 or 10 liter bottle, the base of which is cut to serve as a greenhouse.
When the sun shines on the bottle, the water evaporates and as it collects on the surface of the bottle, it trickles down to the ground, keeping it moist for longer. 2 or 3 can be placed around each tree at a distance of 20 or 30 cm from the trunk.
drip irrigation
It involves placing 1.5 liter pet bottles attached upside down to a cane or stick with zip ties or tape. In the lid we will make a hole the width of a soft drink straw or smaller and insert it a few centimeters.
To regulate the flow we will use a clothes peg that tightens well to be able to close the straw and let it drip little by little. There is also another method which involves screwing a threaded screw into the cover, thus making a hole where less water will come out than the previous method.
The bottom of the bottle in pet is cut to be able to pour water each time one visits the garden. I prefer to use this method for watering vegetables because they have the shallowest roots and the water doesn’t need to filter much.
We recently uploaded a video with a very simple homemade irrigation method explained step by step in this video.
Water with a carafe
It consists of piercing the lowest possible part of the carafe or bottle with a wire previously heated with a lighter. It must not be too big so that too much water does not come out and we will make 1 or 2 holes in the direction of the plant.
Then we will bury it to the middle and fill it with water, covering it quickly so that the water stops coming out. This method is based on irrigation by the loss of air in the soil which enters the bottle and the water exits. For this reason we will see some bubbles enter at the beginning and gradually they will stop entering.
Buried Pet Bottles
This method is for the summer, because the surface of the soil heats up a lot, and when watering it evaporates faster. This is why we will dig several holes about 20 cm deep around the tree that we want to water, about 30 cm from the trunk to prevent rotting.
Garden irrigation system, micro drip irrigation kit…
- 【Unique design】 The micro nozzle can be adjusted to change or even turn off the amount of water. The drip irrigation kit contains all the necessary components to start the system via a tap or a garden hose. The watering area is enlarged so that the plants no longer have to be watered by hand.
- 【Easy to Install】Install the irrigation system in just minutes. You don’t need to dig or whistle. You can start watering your plants immediately.
- 【Save Water & Money】Save up to 70% water compared to conventional water sprays and droplets, making your system ideal for storing water in dry conditions.
- 【A wide range of applications】For spraying, irrigation of lawns, terraces, gardens, vegetable irrigation, roof cooling, irrigation, etc.
- 【Even more fun】Reduce stress, relax and let children understand plant growth and increase practicality. Detachable nozzle for easy cleaning, nursery greenhouse for watering flowers, moist cooling and space saving
We remove the cork from the bottles and put them down, also cutting off the bottom. When watering, we will fill the bottles with water, thus reaching the water directly to the roots and making the most of it. To maintain even more humidity, we can put cardboard and straw around the desired trees.
prickly pear
Pencas are prickly pear leaves, cactus plants that bear fruit known as prickly pears. These plants have the ability to store a lot of water in their leaves, which is why we can use them to supply water to the new trees that we are going to plant.
We dig a fairly deep hole, the one we had planned for the chosen tree and we put a layer of prickly pear stems, we cover with soil a few cm thick and put the tree on top and continue to cover after adding the fertilizer which we decided. .
It is important that the leaves are covered very low so that they do not take root since the prickly pear reproduces through its leaves.
