The use of traps is a good biological alternative to defend the garden and orchard from harmful insects. The principle is very simple: the parasites are attracted and captured, thus many specimens are eliminated.
Vaso Trap is a chromotropic trap that works with food bait, it is a system accessible to everyone, since the cost of the traps is low and the bait can be self-produced with common ingredients.
Depending on the recipe used to produce the bait, you will attract different insects. Another very similar trap that we have already discussed is the Tap Trap, which uses old plastic bottles as a container.

The characteristics of Glass Trap
Vaso Trap chromatographic traps are designed to reuse very common glass jars, especially those used by beekeepers to hold 1 kg of honey, with a non-Bormioli screw cap.
The yellow lid is easily attached to the jar forming the trap, which will come into action once filled with food bait. The trap has six entrances and a funnel that allows insects to enter the jar but prevents them from exiting. Its shape guarantees the bait a shelter against rainwater, preserving its effectiveness, an upper ring is used to hang it.
Color and material . Cup Trap is made of hard plastic, the bright yellow color choice also helps visually attract insects.
Differences with Tap Trap
Compared to the siphon that attaches to plastic bottles, the Vaso Trap has a better aesthetic impact, thanks to the glass container. For this reason, it is more suitable for garden or farm settings, where plastic would cause a mess. In addition, due to its shape and weight, it can also be placed on a stand, without fear of tipping over. Finally, Vaso Trap can also be used as a snail trap, using beer bait.
Red trap vase for Drosophila Suzukii
There is also a red version of the trap, which is more effective at catching Drosophila Suzukii (fruit flies). This insect is a lover of berries and cherries, which is why it prefers the color red. The Drosophila trap also has a modified access funnel, in order to be more selective, preventing the entry of larger insects.

Use: what insects to catch and how to do it
Vase Trap can be used for mass trapping of various insects as well as a monitoring trap. As the trap works through a food bait which attracts the pests by changing the bait, the recipient of the trap is chosen.
Let’s see the possible uses of the Glass Trap and the recipes for the different food baits.
- common flies . Bait composed of 350 ml of water and raw fish waste.
- Fruit flies and olive fly . Bait recipe: 350ml ammonia and raw fish residue.
- Wasps, hornets, velvet wasp . The bait consists of 300 ml of beer and 2 tablespoons of pumpkin or honey, alternately 200 ml of water, 1 glass of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of sugar or honey.
- Fruit fly (Drosophila Suzukii). Using the trap pot with a red lid, the bait is prepared with 250 ml of apple cider vinegar, 100 ml of red wine and a tablespoon of sugar.
-
Caracoles (snails and slugs). The pot should be buried, partially filled with beer. The nozzle should be about 2 cm from the ground, the inner funnel is not necessary. Thoroughly: remove the snails with beer.
- Lepidoptera (moth, borer, moth). Bait made with a liter of wine, 6-7 tablespoons of sugar, cloves and cinnamon. Leave to macerate for 15 days and dilute with 2-3 liters of water. You get bait to fill 11 jars.
Vaso Trap acts in particular if it intercepts the first generation of insects, preventing their reproduction. For this reason, it is advisable to set traps in the spring. The best location is generally in points well exposed to the sun, therefore to the south. In the garden, it is advisable to place at least one trap for each plant.
Every three weeks or so you should remember to empty the jar by changing the bait. When using Vaso Trap against snails, it is best to check often: the container may be full after a few days.
why use cheats
Traps have great advantages over insecticide treatments, which makes them particularly suitable for the defense of organic crops.
- Natural method. The use of traps is an absolutely ecological practice: it does not disperse any chemical substance in the environment and it has no toxic or polluting properties.
- selective action. Traps only affect selected insects, depending on the chosen food bait, different catches are made, while many treatments kill both pests and beneficial insects, for example ladybugs and bees.
- low cost . Once the traps, which are inexpensive in their simplicity, have been purchased, there is virtually no expense. The food baits are self-produced with recipes based on simple ingredients, at a derisory cost. To carry out insecticide treatments, you have to buy chemicals that are often quite expensive.
Of course, traps do not cover all possible insect problems, but for some pests such as bumblebees, wasps, fruit flies and moths they are a very good method of defense and can avoid many difficulties. in the orchard without using pesticides.
