Today’s article is about nasturtium plantwhy plant it in the garden and what it is used for, in addition to being an edible and ornamental plant.

nasturtium plant
The importance of planting nasturtium, a plant also known as taco de la reina and watercress, among others, and whose official and scientific name is Tropaeolum majus, in the garden has various reasons. It is a plant that grows abundantly in the garden, which can be planted as a trailing plant although it is mainly a climbing plant.
Unlike other plants, we will only sow this one once since it self-sows and reproduces very easily year after year, which is why some consider it an invasive plant. This will not be our case, since we do not lack reasons to have it.

sow nasturtium
The nasturtium is a plant that can be sown both in the nursery and directly on the terraces, although in the latter case it is done when spring is advanced, in particular because of the risk of frost which could strongly affect its development.
If, on the contrary, we decide to make nurseries, the ideal time is at the end of winter or at the beginning of spring. In this way, we ensure that the seeds germinate and develop in a favorable environment, avoiding the last frosts of the winter period.
nurseries
In the video you can see how I make the nurseries according to the different uses that we are going to give them, and which I talk about below. Depending on the number of specimens we are going to plant, we fill our pots with seed bed substrate.

And although it is not necessary, given their fertility, if we prefer we can let the seeds soak for a few hours before sowing them, although if we keep the substrate moist there will be no margin error in germination and growth. as expected.
It doesn’t need to be buried much, as I also explain in the video, although it can be buried two or three times its size. It is covered and then a good watering is applied.

care
As for the care of this plant, it is not demanding at all. The risks must be moderate and we must above all excite the stagnations which can affect the roots.
Uses of the nasturtium in the garden
We have already seen the importance of mulch in the garden in several articles, as well as the different ways to do it and the materials to use. Well, one of the uses I give to the nasturtium plant in the garden is what we call live padding. Living mulch is used to protect the earth and bring it to life around our crops.

Another use is place it on the edges. In this way we will have their precious and showy flowers, and since they are early flowers, we will attract beneficial insects much earliersince it is undoubtedly a plant to attract pollinators ideal.

Benefits against pests and diseases in the garden
Perhaps less known is the homemade fungicide what can be done with this plant, although we have already spoken about it several times in La Huertina. This nasturtium fungicide and repellent can be used for many things, such as treatment tomato diseases such as powdery mildew, or simply planting it near the pumpkin crop, repel squash insects.
There association of cultures nasturtium works equally well with carrots as a pest repellent carrot pests.
And another interesting thing is that it works as a trap plant, because many pests will attack them first, which can serve as a signal, either to prepare for fight slugs and snailsor to process the white flybefore they attack other crops.
