How to sprout a walnut at home step by step

I love nuts and as sprouting a nut is relatively simple, we are going to see step by step how to do it at home and have our own tree. Readers of La Huertina already know that if there’s anything I really love, other than growing my food, it’s experimenting with seeds, whether they’re from fruit or fruit bought in the supermarket or come to hand. So I share with you the method I used, something different from the usual to germinate our own nuts, and finally have a walnut tree at home. A small tree that can then be transplanted into the garden or even reforested. Why not?

For me, although it is not always the most correct way to have a tree, it is the most exciting and the most beautiful. Seeing the nut germinate in this case, from our own seed, is great. And it is ideal to do it with the smallest of the house, like the rest of the experiments that we have done in La Huertina, like the rest of 6 fruit trees that we can germinate at home. Little by little we will see more plants and trees, or you can suggest it in the Forum comments.

How to Sprout a Walnut

Like all seeds, three things are needed to germinate nuts, which we can provide by mimicking nature a bit. One of them is darkness. That is to say that they are not in direct sunlight, although this is not always necessary but it is advisable. Another is to provide the right temperatures, or rather the ideal temperature for each seed to germinate, as some need more heat than others. But what they all need, and more or less constantly, is a little moisture for the germination process to begin.

So, recap, we see that to germinate the nut quickly or faster than it would if we dropped the seed or the fruit on the ground, we need a certain amount of darkness, temperatures conditions and a level of humidity necessary for the germination process. take place, unfold as we hope.

In the video I show you step by step so that they germinate and above all the total success and that you see the walnut tree develop.

How to sow or plant a nut

Once our seeds have germinated, a process which, as seen in the video on how to germinate a nut, about two weeks after germination begins, we can sow or plant directly into the ground. To plant the nut we will choose a pot suitable for the needs, in this case a pot deep enough for the roots to grow.

Besides the size of the pot, a good substrate that drains well is important to avoid waterlogging and possible rotting of our future walnut tree. We fill the pot with soil and leave two fingers free at the top. We make a small hole, with a pencil or something similar, and place the root of the seed inside this small hole.

As it begins to sprout we will leave it near the light for the tree to begin to grow. We water every 3 or 4 days and after a year, or the following spring when it is already grown, we will transplant it to its final location.
