Planting blueberries is something we should all be doing in our orchard. With the arrival of winter, our garden has less activity, the summer crops have been removed and we have to take care of other things in our garden. Whether it’s preparing the terraces for spring, planting new fruit trees in our garden or maintaining fruit trees in winter.
But without a doubt is the time in which we can put the fruits of the forest that we like the most, such as raspberries or as we are going to see today, cranberries that my friend Diego de Arandanos Granda Sierra gave me.
How to plant blueberries
Blueberries are great for place them at the boundaries of the plot or orchard They can be used to close the garden or have bushes to stop the winds in our garden, we will also enjoy their fruits even in the first year after planting them in the garden. Like all berries, blueberries require soils a little more acidic than normalWe can achieve this by adding peat to the mixture when we prepare the soil or by putting pine bark on the padding.
Blueberries need soil acidic, moist and with good drainage For their cultivation to be successful, besides blueberries, like many fruit trees, they need a winter rest, which is called cold hourswhich is nothing more than the plant needs to spend certain hours a year to below the 7th so that in the spring they bear fruit optimally. If you take good care of your blueberry plants, they will reward you with abundant, delicious fruit each summer, giving you so much that you won’t have enough time to eat them all fresh.

Now, before planting our blueberry, we will prepare the ground. As you can see in the video, the first thing I do is to prepare the bed, with a depth of about 40 centimeters, although it depends on the size of the plant to be transplanted, it would be its height plus about 10 centimeters.
We added manure, but as we said, it’s a plant that likes acidic soil to thrive. This, in addition to peat, can be achieved with mulch for pine orchards, and we can also add earthworm humus to increase nutrients. We can do it, but if not, we leave you a guide on where to buy earthworm humus.
We make a hole the size of the pot, open the roots and cover with soil, without weighing it down. Then we apply a good watering so that it settles, and it needs constant watering but without flooding. Of course, it does not tolerate droughts.
During the flowering season of the plant, we can add extra potassium, which will be useful, which we can do with banana peels, the so-called banana tea for plants.
When to plant blueberries
But don’t worry those of you in colder winter climates, this is a plant that can handle down to -30º and some frosts in winter, only late frosts which can arrive in spring affect it. Of course, those of you who have very hot climates in the summer, I recommend putting them, like other forest fruits like strawberries, in semi-shaded areas as this can greatly affect the plant and the fruit.
