Tomato purine is a preparation that we make with the suckers of tomato plants and which is a powerful insecticide to fight against pests that are a real nightmare for our crops, such as aphids, cabbage caterpillars or flea beetles, among so many others. .

Tomato coulis raw material
How I have explained in various articles on growing and plant tomatoeswhen spring arrives, it is necessary to prune the tomato plants, in addition to bother them and remove the tomato suckers. The latter is essential when our plants are large, in order to have good tomatoes and to be able to control the growth of the plant and its branches as we please.
Well, precisely these rejects will be used as raw material to prepare our tomato manure. We can also reproduce tomato plants with their own suckers and thus have new tomato plants.
Prepare the tomato puree
The alkaloids present in the leaves of nightshades are poisonous and, although they do not pose any danger to people or animals, they are effective against many parasites, as I have already mentioned.
Ingredients
To make our tomato puree, we will only need:
- 500 grams (half a kilo) of suction cups
- 5 liters of rainwater
If we haven’t picked up this amount of suckers, we can use the branches and leaves of our pruned tomato plants, and if we don’t have rainwater, we’ll let the tap water sit for at least least 1 day for the chlorine to evaporate.
Step 1
The first thing we will do is cut the suckers, branches and/or leaves of the tomato plants into small pieces on a plastic container. I point this out because it is important. don’t wear anything metallic We will cut the branches of the tomato seedlings into small pieces. This applies to all purines, and so make the most of their properties and extract them.
2nd step
The next thing we will do is add all the water, the 5 liters, stir a little and cover the container so that impurities do not enter that could alter the mixture, but we will not close it tightly.
Step 3
Every day we will stir our mixture for two or three minutes more or less, so that it oxygenates. You can also use an aquarium pump and a mini solar panel if you don’t want to be in the know.
We will repeat this process of stirring well for about 3 minutes daily for at least 5 or 6 days, at which point we will begin to see hardly any bubbles coming out, which means fermentation is ready.
Step 4
Once we see that it is ready, we filter it with a plastic strainer, an old t-shirt or a cloth, because here it is also important to avoid metal. Leftovers can be poured into the compost.
How to use this tomato puree
When we have already finished our slurry, we put it in a spray bottle without diluting it, and we have it ready to apply. The ideal is always to do it first thing in the morning or in the afternoon when the sun goes down, to avoid burning the plants. It can be used as an insecticide, but it also works wonders as a pest repellent. What we are going to do is spray the aerial part of the plant and repeat after two or three days.
If in previous years we have had problems with this type of pest, we can anticipate the attack and use it preventively on our crops, spraying every 4 days.
Conservation
Like the rest of the porridge, tomato porridge does not need to be used the same day it is strained. We may save it for later use. Of course, I don’t advise storing it for more than 3 days. It should always be stored in a dark and cool place for proper maintenance.
