What is borojo

The first thing you need to know exactly is what borojó is. Its scientific name is Borojoa patinoi. It is an arboreal species of the Rubiaceae (at least that is what Wikipedia tells us).

Its origin is in the Pacific, more precisely between Colombia, Panama and Ecuador. It occurs in humid forests (and by humid we speak of a relative humidity of 85%) and at a tropical temperature (of 28ºC).

The “weird” name it actually has is a combination of boro, which means head in the Emberá language (a Native American town that lived in the area) and ne-jo, which means fruit. Hence, it is translated as head fruit, stubborn fruit or even round fruit.

And how is this fruit? First, as we told you, it is round, or rather globular. It will be between 7 and 12 centimeters in diameter and will turn from green to brown.

When fully ripe, it is brown and falls from the tree. It can weigh between 740 and 1000 grams, of which 88% is its pulp. Of course, this pulp is acidic and dense.

Do not confuse borojó with Amazonian borojó. The latter, with the scientific name Duroia maguirei, is from the same family, yes, and it also gives you a globular fruit that is very rich in nutrients, but they are totally different.

What is the borojo used for?

There is no doubt that if you like sour fruits, with borojó you may be surprised and like its flavor. However, it is normal to take it in compote, jam, candies or even in the so-called “love juice”.

Now, in traditional medicine, borojó was one of the elements that many used to treat health problems, as well as for masks for oily skin.

It is even useful for embalming.

In fact, they have many different uses. Here are some of the ones we found:

  • Energetic.
  • Hair care (massage).
  • Bronchial problems.
  • Cancer treatment.
  • Hypertension.
  • Masks.
  • Plasters for cures.
  • Cellulite treatment.
  • Swelling treatment.
  • Diuretic.
  • Aphrodisiac.
  • Embalming corpses.
  • Against fever.
  • For the kidneys.

benefits of borojó

Going deeper into the above, here we want to tell you about the health benefits of borojó. And it is that it can make you think about taking a vitamin supplement that carries it. Although we recommend that if you have any health problems, you consult a doctor before starting to take it, as he is the best “advisor” you can have.

That said, borojó is one of the fruits with a high concentration of fructose and glucose (meaning for diabetics it could be a sugar bomb). But it’s also high in protein, phosphorus, calcium, iron, vitamins B and C, and antioxidants.

And all this allows us to grant you a series of advantages when taking it. Specifically, the following:

Gives you a “hit” of energy

Thanks to the vitamin B that this fruit contains, it helps to increase the energy levels that you have.

You could say that it is an energizing but natural drink. It is indicated for athletes, but if you have low energy or feel that you lack it (for example, with spring fatigue), it may be good for you to take it.

protect your brain

In this case, it is due to the high concentration of phosphorus it has. Often the head is what we pay the least attention to and that’s not good. So giving him a phosphorus supplement will help to have a more agile mind (to not forget anything, to have more reactivity, etc.).

It is a natural aphrodisiac

It is often known in Panama, Colombia and the Amazon as “love juice” because it has very similar properties to Viagra.

The healing of wounds

In fact, many natives where borojó comes from use it when they need to heal wounds, because not only does it work against infections, but they are also said to heal much faster.

fight depression

Depression, anxiety or even behavioral problems in children can be treated with borojó.

Helps cell regeneration

In this case, it acts by strengthening both DNA and RNA structures, so it manages to recover dead or disappearing cells.

Help with cholesterol problems

If you have high cholesterol, borojó can help lower it and regulate levels (both good and bad).

Health Benefits

Whether it’s balancing blood sugar levels, reducing high blood pressure, relieving menstrual pain or infections… It’s all because it has been discovered that it is rich in polyphenols, a compound that can influence all of the above in a positive way. .

Now that you know what borojó is and what it is used for, would you dare to take it daily?
