Come to the Garden: Grow Your Own Food

The book is intended for all those people who are just starting out or who need a helping hand in the garden. Just as we already do with the YouTube channel and with this blog, the book is one more medium that helps me get closer to others and contribute my grain of sand in this journey.

The book La Huertina by Toni

In Come to the Garden: Grow Your Own Foods, schematically and in just over 200 pages, I start by explaining to you why you should have your own garden. In the first chapter I start with the 10 basic principles to start in this orchard:

  • Start small and go insurance
  • Plant what grows well in your climate
  • Plant what you like to eat
  • location is everything
  • Giving importance to irrigation
  • Respect the vital space of each culture
  • Prepare for pests
  • take care of the ground
  • Keep a diary of your garden
  • Build your own nursery

Throughout this first part, I give advice on rotation and support cultureas we usually do on this site, as well as tips for garden toolsaccess to water and others.

Build, protect and nurture

In the second section, Build, protect and nurture your garden, I cover many aspects that I believe are essential and fundamental to having a healthy and productive garden: garden types, greenhouses, soil preparation, fertilizers and natural fertilizers.

Usually I

The third part is entirely devoted to the field. What is the optimal pH of the soil and its importance, how to measure and correct soil pHthe home test examples I use, and how to upload or download it.

I also touch on the types of soils, how they can be improved, and the types of crops depending on the soil to end this section with what I am doing to improve microbiology, improve the substrate, protect crops and improve drainage, among others.

seed beds

Part Four is all about nurseries, with the advice I usually give here but condensed into a handful of pages, to make it all clear to you.

COME TO THE GARDEN

Harvests

Chapter 5 introduces the different crops: What, how and when to plant, grow and harvest in your garden. With the experience of these years has turned into a series of practical advice.

Herbs

The sixth part deals with the herbs that appear in the garden and those that are cultivated, the so-called weeds, the aromatic herbs and the auxiliary flora which contribute to the well-being of the garden.

allies

The seventh part is devoted to the allies of the garden, those animals (insects, birds, mammals) which contribute to the garden, such as pollinators and others, which benefit greatly from the control of pests naturally or in various ways, as is the case with hens which both help to control pests and improve and fertilize the soil.

the reproduction

Parts 8 and 9 are devoted to reproduction, first with the obtaining of seeds and the care of the seeds, then with other very common means, such as grafting and cuttings.

Pruning and training

Section 10 is dedicated to one of the big things that many newbie gardeners overlook: pruning and training. Ways to guide and care for our crops, which provide enormous benefits and which I explain in detail.

Plagues and diseases

Part 11 deals with the garden’s biggest nightmare: pests and diseases that can seriously damage crops. I explain the different ecological methods to fight them, and at the end I share a list of specific ecological products to fight against the different pests, as well as a table with the diseases and pests most common to every culture.

Urban garden

The last part of the book is devoted to urban gardenwith tips for beginners, types of containers, the best grows to start with, and some extra tips for growing in the kitchen.

Finally, I attach a complete cultivation guide.

The book: another way to approach the Huertina

This book is an important step for me, not because I am going to dedicate myself to writing books, but because I condense in almost 230 pages all the knowledge that I acquired while working in the orchard, but above all with feedback from readers of this blog and subscribers to my channel.

My idea is to return with these pages a little of what I learned and not only what I know. precisely for that Come to the Garden: Grow Your Own Food It is, for me, a personal and very special book.
