Growing garden plants: how and when

When gardening, it can often be a good idea to pack horticultural plants, i.e. move some soil around the base of the plant, creating a small mound to protect the bottom of the stem.

This technique is useful in many cases and has several advantages to be discovered: in many cases potatoes must be tamped, but for different reasons many other vegetables also benefit from the practice of tamping.

Let’s find out together when it is best to put the soil back at the base of the plant and how to do it correctly.

The practice of tamping is done in the garden for various reasons, we have listed the most important ones below. There are many vegetables that we can pack, although the reason why it’s best to do so varies from crop to crop.

Protector Tixag__7

Protect the plant from the cold. As winter approaches, put the duvet on the bed and tuck in the covers. In the same way, a greater layer of soil protects the root system of the plant from freezing. This is especially true for vegetables grown in late fall, winter and perennial crops.

keep the soil moist longer during the summer months.

Prevent irrigation from digging a hole near the base of the plant, or that prolonged rains create stagnation dangerous to the rot that may result. In this case, tixag__12 helps with drainage.

Increase to stabilize the plant

Encourage more radical development . The extra soil provided is extra space to form roots, it is freshly moved, comfortable and cozy soil. Therefore, a slight pressure on the neck has the effect of releasing new roots.

Stabilize tall but not very strong plants . The mound of earth strengthens the plant, prevents it from being bent by the wind. If you allow the formation of additional roots as seen in the previous point, the bush will be even more stable. This is useful, for example, in cabbage plants.

Blatenage for bleaching

There are vegetables from which the stem is harvested, or the basal leaves. In this case, the compaction causes a lack of light and, consequently, bleaching, which can increase the harvest and improve the quality of the vegetables, making them more tender and tasty. We’re talking about crops like celery, fennel, asparagus, and leeks, so the purpose of the stuffing is to blanch the vegetable.

potato bounce

In vegetable tubers, it can be pressed to prevent the tubers from reaching the light. It is the typical stuffing of the potato crop, probably the plant for which this work is carried out most frequently.

The advice for potatoes is to do some tamping during the cycle of the plant, we have deepened this work in the article dedicated to the tamping of potatoes.

The best way to steal plants

To make a good fold, the first important thing is to choose the right moment. It would be harmful to move the earth on a plant that is too small, but if we wait too long the operation becomes of little use. The choice of when to pack, however, depends on the chosen crop: there is no general rule that we can write here, so please refer to each vegetable cultivation map.

There is no need to over-compact by burying the leaves, as they can rot and develop disease, including fungal problems. The only exception is the tamping for bleaching where obviously the leaves will end up partially or completely underground so they can’t photosynthesize and bleach at best.

The tamped ground should not crumble immediately but should form a solid mountain, so it may be useful to tamp down slightly damp soil .
