Asparagus is a perennial crop, that is, it must remain in the same plot for a few years, so it should not be planted every year. Asparagus can produce up to 20 years if grown with care. Not the easiest of vegetables to grow, but this perennial can certainly give great satisfaction to those who take good care of it.
There are two ways to plant asparagus: you can start from seed by growing the plant, or you can get rhizomes from existing plants. These rhizomes are called “legs” and are undoubtedly the easiest way to introduce this crop into your garden.

where to buy legs
Asparagus can be grown from your own plants or those you know, but can also be found for sale at nurseries. There are many varieties of asparagus, which leg is planted determines what you will get in the garden. As the leg is a rhizome taken from a plant, it maintains the exact genetic heritage of the mother asparagus, which makes it a good mode of propagation which preserves the variety without hybridization.

When to plant asparagus
Asparagus is planted directly in the garden, it is better to do this at the end of winter, as long as it is not too cold, otherwise early spring is expected. Therefore, in general, the planting of asparagus takes place in February in regions with a very mild climate, in March or April in the rest of Italy.
In which phase of the moon to put the paws
If you want to follow the phases of the moon, planting asparagus legs should be done during the waning moon phase, when tradition attributes a positive influence to underground development and would therefore help the leg to take root. There is no evidence of any real influence of the moon on plants, although many growers still believe it is important to plant and transplant asparagus in the correct moon phase, if you want to do so. , you can read the moon phase calendar.
soil preparation
Asparagus legs require loose, well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. As the plantation will have to last several years, even 10 or 15 years, it is advisable to be careful to prepare the ground well, with a shovel and a hoe. If the soil does not drain or tends to compact, it is a good idea to do two things: mix in some river sand to make it less loamy and cultivate it with raised trunks for better drainage of excess water.
How to plant rhizomes
After a deep treatment, we proceed to dig the groove of the implant, which we can make about 30/40 centimeters deep. At the base of this hole we put a generous layer of mature manure, ideally using horse manure, but also cattle manure or compost can work well. Fertilizer should be slow-release because it won’t work just the first year, so it’s best to avoid easily washable substances such as pelleted manure. After fertilizing, a light layer of soil is placed and the bed is created where to put the legs, which should be about 15/20 cm deep.
The legs should rest inside the slot. Care must be taken that there are no damaged or rotten parts on the legs that are planted, in case they can be pruned with scissors. When placing the roots there, they should be kept open as much as possible, so that the asparagus can take root immediately in the best possible way.
After putting the legs in, close the furrow and rake to level the ground.

Rooting Planting Distances
Asparagus are quite demanding plants, so they want a discreet space between one plant and another, so it is important to maintain at least 35 cm between plants and one meter between rows.
