Have you bought already blooming hyacinths, or bulbs of these flowers to plant, and you don’t know what to do when they bloom? Don’t worry: this is a very common question that has a fairly simple answer. In fact, these plants are not only very easy to maintain, but they are also among the least difficult to wake up next winter.
And we are talking about bulbs that are very resistant to frost, so much so that it is not necessary to protect them at home since they can withstand up to 18 degrees below zero. But of course, what to do with hyacinth bulbs after flowering?
You have two options: leave them in place (pot/potting soil), or take them out and store them elsewhere. Let’s see in detail how to proceed in each case:
You can leave the bulbs where they are

It is the most comfortable option, without a doubt, and also the most interesting since it is the one that best adapts to what is happening in its natural habitat. Let me explain: the bulbs – whatever they are – after flowering are kept in place, underground, unless of course an animal removes them. But if they are lucky enough to stay there, they will have the opportunity to produce new “balls”. These little bulbs will sprout from the “mother bulb”, and will be the ones that, over time, will ensure that where there was only one hyacinth, there will now be many.
But if it’s pulled out of the ground, it’s very, very difficult for it to grow those bulbs, because it needs the protection of the ground to do that. For that I recommend that you don’t delete it unless you have no other option (for example, if you have to do some work in that area of the garden, or if that pot breaks and you have to plant it in a new one).
How to maintain the hyacinth bulb that is kept in the ground or in a pot?
Basically what needs to be done is water it if you see that the soil is very, very dry, and remove the grass who can develop in this area. This is particularly important if you are growing your hyacinth in a container, as it is a container with limited space, and if you let the weeds take over the bulb will have a very hard time growing and flowering on the bulb. time comes.

The other option is less comfortable, but depending on the situation, it is the most judicious (for example, as we have said previously, in the event of works, work on the ground floor, etc.). How are blisters removed? With great care, of course. The steps to follow are:
- First, you need to know where the bulbs are planted. For this, it is better to mark the area with something: stones, decorative figures or whatever you can think of. This way, whether the bulb is already at rest or not, you can locate it easily.
- After, with a hoe make several trenches around the bulb. These should be about ten centimeters deep (or something deeper, if you made it deeper when planting), so you can remove it without damaging the roots too much.
- And finally, extract it with caution.
And now what? Now we have to clean it. Remove dirt with a brush or dry cloth until it is as clean as possible, then spray fungicide and leave it in a place protected from direct sunlight for a few hours, until it dries.
Finally, you need to put it in carton box or paper bag until fall returns and it’s time to replant it. Of course, take a sharp knife or scissors and poke several holes in the bag or box so the bulb can breathe, otherwise it will spoil.
