When to mash onions

Avoid rot. This is one of the reasons why the stems of onions should be walked on before they sprout, as early summer rains could lead to water seepage and rot the entire bulb, ruining the harvest.
Speed up the drying of the rod. Another thing is that by folding it we speed up the process that would naturally take a little longer.
Contributes to the closure of the ampoule. Onions, or rather the stalks of onions, are also bent at the time before harvesting, to help the bulb close up and so before they can be relied upon to grow them.
Prevent it from blooming. Another important reason is to prevent the plant from starting to flower. Something we would leave alone in case we wanted seeds.
How to crush onions
What we are going to do, as you can see in the video, will simply bend the rod. We would do it with the foot if it is on the ground, hence the name “stepping”, but in the case of terraces or potted gardens we do it with our hands. It is important to be careful not to break the stems.
