In the case of apple tree seed germination the usual way in which we have to germinate our seeds changes a bit, normally we place them in places where they receive and have good temperatures, but in the case of apple trees they have need hours of cold to be able to germinate properly. That is why it is important that, as I show you in the video, we put our seeds in the fridge for them to germinate.
HOW LONG IT TAKES AN APPLE SEED TO GERMINATE
The apple is not one of the seeds that are characterized by rapid germination. In fact, in the video we can see that it took 4 weeks to be able to germinate the seed, although it can take up to 6 weeks to germinate. So be patient, and the step of putting the seed in the fridge or refrigerator is essential.
HOW TO SOW OR PLANT AN APPLE SEED
Once the seeds have germinated without the need to remove the cotyledons (first leaves), we can plant our apple seed in a pot. Ideally it should be a deep pot for the roots of the fruit tree to develop perfectly and we will add a special well-fed substrate that we can make ourselves or buy a special fruit substrate.
We take our seed with the root and place it horizontally on the substrate, burying the root but being very careful not to break it. In just under a week, our apple tree will begin to sprout.
HOW TO CARE FOR AN APPLE TREE
Now that we have seen how to germinate an apple seed, let’s see the follow-up, once planted. The apple tree should always be in full sun. This is essential for its development and growth, so if we do it in autumn or winter we must leave it indoors or in a protected greenhouse and we can take it out to the window or terrace in spring and in summer.
The first year and until the following spring, it is ideal to have it in a pot, then to transplant it to its final location. The watering must be light, very careful with continuously damp substrates that can damage our tree or even cause the appearance of fungi. I water it once a week and that’s more than enough.
