Tips for getting your roses to bloom again
Trim them once in a while
In order for the roses to be able to produce those precious flowers to which they have accustomed us, it is very important that we do so regularly. Throughout the year we have to cut the stems that have flowered, and towards the end of winter we will have to prune them a little more drastically, lowering their height by more or less half.. In this way we will force it to bring out new stems that will surely bloom. But how exactly are they cut?
flower size
Roses are plants which, in order to produce quality flowers, that is to say large and beautiful flowers, must be pruned regularly. If this were not done, we would end up with beautiful bushes… but they would only grow leaves and branches, not roses. So when you see a faded flower, you just have to cut the flower, but also a bit of the stem that connects it to the plant.
For the avoidance of doubt, I really like to cut about 5 centimeters (maximum) of stem each time; that is, I calculate from the base of the rose down, five centimeters. In case the plant is a pitiminí rosebush, due to its characteristics, it is better not to cut so much; only about 2-3 centimeters.
drastic size
A drastic pruning is practiced so that the rosebush produces new stems at the beginning of spring. With this, we ensure that you end up with plenty of flowers, not only in this season but also throughout the year. How come? Well, what we’re going to do is:
- Reduce your sizewhatever you want, but keep in mind that you can only cut green parts. That is, if the stems begin to be woody underneath, this part should not be touched.
- You also have to remove the nippleswhich are these stalks sticking out of small leaves (they are clearly distinguished from the others by their size).
Use a pruner for stems 1 to 1.5 cm thick and a handsaw for thicker ones.
Water your roses so they don’t get thirsty
Plants need water to stay alive, but also to be able to carry out their functions. Producing flowers means consuming a lot of water, so it is essential to keep the substrate or soil moist so that we can see your roses again. So, it should be watered very often in summer, three to four times a week. In winter, depending on the weather, they will be watered once a week, or even twice.
pay them regularly
These plants not only want water, but also food. They won’t grow and bloom if their roots don’t have the nutrients they need to absorb within reach. so that they are then transformed into energy.
For this reason, it must be taken into account that, if they are to be planted in the garden, it is first necessary to know the characteristics of this land, since they will have many problems if they are planted, for example, in eroded soils.
What is the best fertilizer for roses?
If we want them to produce flowers, it is strongly recommended to fertilize them from spring to late autumn with a specific fertilizer for roses. It is a product found in nurseries, ready to use.
Although if we prefer to opt for natural products, we can pay with guano or organic fertilizers that we surely have at home. Click here for more information.
Place them in an area where they receive sunlight
This is perhaps one of the most important things we have to do if we want them to thrive again. If we put them in the shade, their flowers will not sprout. So, they will have to be placed outside. They can be in partial shade, but only if they receive a minimum of 4 hours of direct sunlight.
Inside the house they will not be able to be well. Also, keep in mind that they resist frost well (except for some species and cultivars, such as the pitiminí rose), so it will not be necessary to protect them.
With these tips, your precious roses are sure to bloom.
When do roses bloom?
Roses are shrubs that have a long flowering season. This will vary depending on weather and crop conditions, but there are two seasons when it is normal to see them with flowers: spring and summer. During these months you can really enjoy these plants, because the roses grow almost non-stop.
In regions with a mild climate, such as throughout the Mediterranean or in many parts of the Canary Islands (except perhaps high altitude areas), you will see flowers even in autumn.
