How to propagate rosemary by cuttings

Rosemary cuttings are one of the most effective ways we have to reproduce this aromatic. And it is that rosemary, without a doubt, is one of the most appreciated aromatics both for its aroma and for its qualities both at the table and what it helps us in the garden with its aroma and its flowers , something we saw in the post where we explain how, where and when to plant rosemary.

So since more than one of us would like to have such a plant at home, in the orchard or in the garden, we are going to see how to reproduce rosemary by cuttings and thus have a new plant from a branch.

To reproduce our rosemary we will use homemade natural rooting agents like willow rooting or lentil rooting. We have already seen both in other articles as well as how we can use them, although this time we are doing it a little differently, since rosemary is quite a sensitive plant.

Rosemary cuttings: how to reproduce this plant

Aromatics as a general rule we will try cuttings after summer floweringso by my standards and all the times I’ve tried and succeeded, the best time to do this is autumn. That’s not to say it can’t be done year-round, but in my experience it has always been the most successful time to make rosemary or other aromatic cuttings.

Propagate rosemary by cuttings

We will make rosemary cuttings with a semi-woody branch, that is, from the second year. As I said before, the best time is fall, although late summer can also be useful.

We will cut about 15 to 20 cm, but no more to prevent it from having trouble rooting. We make a diagonal cut and we will put it in rooting overnight. As you will see in the video, you can both put the branch with the leaves down and remove it. In both cases, we could have the same results.

Once this is done, the next day we will throw away the rooting agent or use it to water another plant, and leave our cuttings in the water. If we want to root again with the same cuttings, we will do it after 7 days, not before. Once in the water, we will leave it next to the window, in an area that is not too cold, in order to obtain better results.

From 3 weeks the rosemary will begin to take root, with which we can transplant it into a first container or pot, not exceeding 15 centimeters in height. We are going to prepare this pot with a substrate that mixes soil with earthworm humus. We make a hole, place the rosemary cutting, taking care not to damage the root and gently cover. We water it every other day with rooting, but keep in mind that it doesn’t like excess moisture.
