Snake plant transplant shock is a phenomenon that can occur when moving or transplanting your snake plant and is quite difficult to avoid.
This can happen to the vast majority of plants and unfortunately your snake plant is not exempt from this possibility.

What is the shock transplant?
Transplant shock is a common occurrence in plants and is characterized by common or worrisome symptoms when a plant is transplanted or moved to another location.
This problem can cause your snake plant to not grow as well as it used to or to look unhealthy compared to its normal appearance.
Often, symptoms after transplant shock can be mistaken for other causes, when only transplant shock has an effect.
What causes transplant shock?
There are actually several different reasons why your snake plant may be experiencing transplant shock.
Improper handling of your Snake plant or disturbing the roots too much is one of the main causes, but it can also be due to changes in growing site conditions, using a different type of soil than before, or using a different type or size of container.
Essentially, these are major changes and they stress your snake plant, causing it to show signs of transplant shock.
It’s like moving into a new house, making big changes can be stressful and your plant will react with unusual signs.
Signs of transplant shock
When your snake plant is going through transplant shock, there can be a number of different signs or symptoms that tell you the plant is under stress.
Some of these signs may include the following.
- Leaf fall (bending, falling, etc.)
- Leaf scorch symptoms
- rolled up leaves
- The leaves are turning yellow
- understory growth
- brown leaf tips
- The leaves are starting to fall
- Errors started to appear
If these signs or symptoms do not appear until after the transplant or transplant, the most likely cause is transplant shock.

Will my snake plant recover?
The vast majority of the time, a snake plant will recover from transplant shock on its own, provided you take good care of it.
However, this may take some time.
You just need to keep your expectations in check, as it can take weeks or months for the tongue to return to normal after transplant shock.
You don’t have to do anything, but there are a few ways to lessen transplant shock or help your snake plant recover faster than it would on its own.
Tips to Reduce Transplant Shock
In fact, there are quite a few things you can do in the meantime to help your snake seedling recover from transplant shock and some of those things include the following.
Minimize root disturbance
Root disturbance is one of the main causes of transplant shock, so it’s best to minimize the disturbance as much as possible.
This means that you don’t want to damage the roots when you take your snake plant out of its pot and try to keep as many of the roots intact as possible.
One way to minimize this is to water the soil before you begin transplanting to reduce friction during removal and reduce the risk of accidentally breaking the root.
Prune unhealthy growth
Pruning unhealthy growth allows your snake plant to focus more energy on fresh, healthy growth instead of wasting it on irreversible growth.
This means pruning badly discolored leaves, leggy growth, and even roots that have become diseased or rotten.
By the way, if the roots are dark or soft when you take the Sansevieria out of the pot, you may have root rot.

transplant with indirect light
Although snake plants can receive full sun, after transplanting you should keep the plant in bright, indirect light to reduce the stress already associated with transplanting.
You can keep it in this lightweight state for a few weeks before moving it if needed.
keep everything the same
Since major changes can cause transplant shock, it’s best to keep everything as before to lessen the shock.
This means using the same type of soil, same light intensity and same type of container if possible.
That being said, if you weren’t doing things right before, like using the wrong floor type or the wrong light type, you can skip it.
Watch out for fertilizer
While it’s good to supply your snake plant with nutrients, you don’t want to add too much too quickly until the roots have had a chance to settle in and establish themselves in the new location.
You can wait for the shock of the transplant to completely wear off or just use a lot less than you normally would.
Try Epsom salt instead
There is some evidence that Epsom salt can help plants recover from transplant shock more quickly, likely due to its extra magnesium content.
If you want to try this, you can add 1 teaspoon of diluted Epsom salt to a gallon of water and water in the soil after transplanting.
Water the soil immediately
Watering the soil right after transplanting is a great way to hydrate your snake plant and ease the stress of change.
This would also be a good time to try Epsom salt in addition to water.
